Reasons
For
Moving
7
Water Issues
  • Need for Improved Water Quality
    • Each year we deal with flooding issues
    • During major storms the water just sits and does not soak into the ground because we are on top of the old Coal Slag Pile
    • At our current location the water is barely clean enough to water animals

8
Wind
  • Currently the wind is a big problem
    • Miserable for visitors wanting to see the animals.
    • Very harsh conditions for our staff and volunteers to work on projects and feed animals
    • Harsh conditions for the animals

9
Built on an old
Garbage Dump

  • Every time we dig, we dig up garbage
    • An old car was dug up when Luther’s habitat was constructed & recently the hood of a car surfaced in Chinook’s pen
    • Baseball caps, plastic, misc. items

  • Concerns about the possibility of leaking toxins and gases

Possibility of a New High School
  • Potential site in Coal Miner’s Park next to BNC
    • Cause extreme stress for the animals
    • Animals need quiet, not the sounds of construction and extra cars
    • Example: During the Homecoming Bonfire and 4th of July Don & Ruth stay with the animals to calm them down
