Helen died October 5, 2011 at the age of 17.  She was the BNC’s mascot.  Plans are in motion to have a memorial designed for the Center’s much-loved mountain lion.  Anyone who would like to donate to this  memorial can send a contribution to the Beartooth Nature Center, P.O. Box 675 Red Lodge, MT 59068.  The plan is to have a park bench built with donors’ names engraved, and to have the bench situated under a tree near Helen’s habitat.

Beartooth Nature Center Announces New Executive Director

The Beartooth Nature Center (BNC) in Red Lodge is pleased to announce the hiring of a new Executive Director.  Michelle Marion of Chicago, Illinois has accepted the position.  For the last eight years Michelle has owned and operated her own business.  Prior to that entrepreneurial venture she was employed by the John G. Shedd Aquarium in Chicago.  The Shedd is the world’s largest marine mammal habitat and over 2 million people visit that facility every year.

Michelle earned her undergraduate degree in economics from Northwestern University and her MBA from Northwestern’s Kellogg School of Management.

The Nature Center’s Board President, Vaughn Clutter says “Michelle brings a high-energy, fiscally minded approach to BNC.  The combination of strong business and entrepreneurial skills combined with a passion for animals and experience in the non-profit arena fit the Nature Center’s needs perfectly.  We believe she has the right sklls to lead the Nature Center to financial stability and growth.”  Michelle will be on board right after the 1st of the year.

BNC has been a wildlife refuge since 1991.  It cares for over 70 animals that were either injured, orphaned or so humanized that they could not survive if returned to their natural habitat.  Many of these animals are placed at BNC by Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks, or U.S. Fish, Wildlife and Parks.  The Nature Center has over 5,100 members and over 30,000 visitors a year.  BNC is a popular, integral part of Carbon County and offers numerous programs to educate adults and children about wild animals and to see them firsthand.
